Reviews for Eskdale Inn in Castleton : Pubs Galore
There must have been at least 20 pieces of scampi on my plate – it was beautiful. My father-in-law, who without fail will have apple pie for pudding, couldn’t manage a dessert this time and daughter Charlotte, who has a good appetite, didn’t quite manage to get to the end. My favourite visits here have been in the winter when it’s freezing outside and if you are lucky you can sometimes get a table next to one of the roaring coal fires.
It was rated by Condé Nast Traveller as one of the most beautiful restaurants in all of Scotland. The easiest route is from Oban – Craignure, but Tobermory is the island’s capital so the ferry from Kilchoan is best if you don’t drive. This cosy cottage offers modern amenities as well as being close to some amazing attractions and breathtaking views. Not only can visitors take in the fresh sea air, but they can also explore some remarkable castles too!

Then an announcement was made in November 2020 saying the services of Murray Wilson had been secured and I went from mildly interested to gripped. Attended pub at lunchtime so did not get any idea of alcoholic drinks selection. Even though it was Mother’s Day and all the tables were reserved, the staff were all lovely and fitted us in for fantastic roast dinner and a couple of pints. Popped in after a trip to Runswick bay with the dogs.

Tastefully refurbished in May 2013 we have real ales fabulous food open fires accommodation friendly staff and stunning views. Wilson wears his considerable skills lightly, but this is assured, imaginative cooking with beautifully balanced flavours. Desserts don’t disappoint; an elegant sea buckthorn tart has a pop of colour, and something called simply “Strawberry” is so much more; sort of cheesecake, sort of mousse, sort of marvellous.

But the ruins are located in such an epic spot, with coastal views that you’ll want to see. It has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere, cosy rooms and a seafood restaurant serving freshly caught seafood. The streets are very scenic, with whitewashed houses and beautifully well-maintained gardens right by the lake. This rocky and rugged headland can be reached on foot at low tide, making it a great spot for a leisurely stroll or a more adventurous rock pool expedition! Hiking is also popular in the area, especially the Woolacombe to Ilfracombe hike, which follows the coastline, and, allows you the chance to spot sea lions and dolphins. Pet owners will be pleased to know that dogs are welcome to stay in any of the 10 rooms located in the main building.

- After a few miles of nothingness, in terms of buildings of any kind, The Lion Inn looms in front of you.
- Il Mulino & Hood are two sister restaurants located in the heart of Stokesley.
- …”You’d think Carol Deans had had enough of the white stuff – she’s lost count of the number of times she’s been snowed in at work.
- The building has been extended at various times over its 450 years (it’s believed to have been first settled by the Order of Crouched Friars “to relieve their poverty”), but from the inside, certainly, you can’t see the join between the centuries.
